Golden coconuts

This photo was taken in the Sky City hotel car park next to Mindil Beach late one April afternoon in Darwin. The light on the coconut trees was spectacular, and worth sharing.

Anonymous number plate

Darwin is known for its personalized or custom number plates. They are everywhere and many of them are really funny or clever, like this one. Yes, that is me faintly reflected above the name plate. Taken at Mindil Beach in Darwin late one afternoon in April 2008.

Message blown

This was an ad on the back of a toilet door in Darwin. Someone has changed the message from the effects of depression to the effects of marijuana use. Click on the image to read it and see how Bipolar has been changed to weed and low to blown! Taken in Darwin in April 2008

Sweet girl at market

I took these photos of a girl and her mother at the market during a visit to Kawthoung (Victoria Point) in Burma (Myanmar) in December 2006. Like most Burmese woman, she has got Thanaka cream smeared over her face to protect her skin from the sun and improve its tone. Although these people were really poor, they were rich in spirit and were smiling an happy and not only were they willing to be photo graped by a western stranger, they frequently asked me first if I would take their picture.

Balancing act

I took this photo of two young woman during a visit to Kawthoung (Victoria Point) in Burma (Myanmar) in December 2006. I like their expressions and how they are balancing the trays on their heads. I shot this photo into the sun without flash so I had to overexpose it to get the detail in their faces and that is why the background looks so washed out.

Wicked campers

What is about Wickedcampers.com? I have photographed many of them in the course of my travels, and they are usually very funny, like this one: Save a tree, eat a beaver!". Photographed in Darwin in April 2008.

Cover up?

Western tourists wandering around the Hue Citadel. I sometimes wonder about their choice of clothing and their cultural and political nous in what is a historically significant World Heritage site in a conservative country. You're not at the beach girls! Taken in Hue in March 2008

Walled in.

A building inside the Hue Citadel, right up next to the imposing Citadel wall. I guess it is walled in! I like the textures of the wall, and how it is weathering. The building looks pretty old as well. Photo taken in March 2008 in Hue, Vietnam.

A beauty salon in Hue, Vietnam. I love the advertising - so bold and colourful - contrasted against the shabby, drab security gates. Taken in March 2008.

Traffic jam!

A two-wheeled traffic jam in Hue, Vietnam. This is actually a two-way street, if you look closely on the left you can see some oncoming riders coming against the morning rush hour. Photo taken in March 2008

Rich and poor

Ppoverty and wealth almost side by side in Hue, Vietnam. Although Vietnam is modernizing quickly, there is still a lot of poverty and many many people doing it tough and the rich, as exemplified by the villa top left, don't really seem to care about their less fortunate countrymen. Taken in March 2008

G'day Brad!

I love this one. It is the practice in Hoi An to have testimonials from satisfied customers in tailor shops. But this one took the cake. Brad from Perth caused us endless mirth! Photo snapped in March 2008

Stand up baby!

I have included this photo because of the baby standing up on the motorbike! Scary stuff. Photographed in Saigon in March 2008.

Therese in a taxi on the way to the airport in Saigon, looking very happy. Note how clean the cab is. Photo taken in March 2008.

Vietnamese beauty

I took this photo from inside a taxi in Saigon in March 2008. The long white gloves really stand out and it is an unusual perspective as this shot could only be achieved from a moving vehicle, which is always fraught with difficulty and reflections.

Taking flight

A Masked Lapwing bird (Vanellus miles) in flight at Fogg Dam Conservation reserve outside Darwin, taken in April 2008. It wasn't easy to get this bird in focus as it flew past. This was the best of several attempts.

Walking on water

A beautiful Comb-Crested Jacana bird (Irediparra gallinacea) at Fogg Dam Conservation reserve near Darwin taken in April 2008 with a 450 mm telephoto lens. These are small shy birds (up to 23 mm in length) so getting close to them is not easy.

Nguiu reflections

I love reflections, especially complex ones, and this one is complex. Photographed at Nguiu on the Tiwi Islands in April 2008, it is a picture of my colleague Phil closing up the office on the Australian Government complex site as reflected through the back window on the left hand side of his vehicle. On the left you can see the portable fridge in the car!
