Paperbark swamp

Taking flight


A Masked Lapwing bird (Vanellus miles) in flight at Fogg Dam Conservation reserve outside Darwin, taken in April 2008. It wasn't easy to get this bird in focus as it flew past. This was the best of several attempts.

Walking on water

A beautiful Comb-Crested Jacana bird (Irediparra gallinacea) at Fogg Dam Conservation reserve near Darwin taken in April 2008 with a 450 mm telephoto lens. These are small shy birds (up to 23 mm in length) so getting close to them is not easy.

The birds in the top photo are, left to right: Wandering Whistling Duck (dendrocygna arcuata), Radjah Shelduck (Tadorna Radjah), Wandering Whistling Duck, Radjah Shelduck and a Darter (Anhinga melanogaster). The middle photo shows wandering whistling ducks and Radjah Shelducks and the bottom photo is a Radjah Shelduck taking off.
