This is a billabong near Djurranalpi Outstation on Elcho Island photographed in July 2008. Note how the level of the water has dropped since the end of the wet season.

Swamp house

Why build a house next to a swamp? I have no idea but this house is no longer used. The billabong and house is near Djurranalpi Outstation on Elcho Island and I took the photo in July 2008.

This is a magnificent Brahminy Kite photographed on a visit to the beach at Djurranalpi Outstation on Elcho Island in July 2008. I took this photo using a handheld telephoto 70-300 mm lens (450 mm at 35mm) at its extreme range and that is the reason why the picture is not sharp.

Djurranalpi Beach

The beautiful and very remote beach at Djurranalpi Outstation on Elcho Island in July 2008. Very few people besides the local Yolngu Aboriginal inhabitants would have ever visited here. Elcho Island is Aboriginal land, 550 km north east of Darwin, which is a two hour flight away and the island is accessible only by air. Then the Djurranalpi Outstation is 40 km from Galiwinku, the main settlement on Elcho Island, on a pretty atrocious dirt road. There are only 3 houses at the Djurranalpi Outstation. 5 km further on from the outstation, on a terrible 4wd track which is under water for most of the year because it traverses the edge of a billabong, one arrives at the beach! And believe me, it is worth the effort!

Djurranalpi Beach on Elcho Island

This is beautiful Djurranalpi Beach on Elcho Island in the Northern Territory of Australia showing the entrance to a Billabong which is separate from the ocean in the dry season but during the wet season is reconnected. Yes, that is an abandoned aluminium dinghy!
