Stunning bilabong
A beautiful billabong near the Maparu outstation in Arnhem Land, photographed from a light aircraft in September 2008. Click on the image to see just how big the billabong is. Awesome
Dear Jeremy I am really intrigued by your image; "Stunning Billabong" Some questions if you (or anyone else) have time to answer. 1/ Is this small body of water really a 'billabong'; that is, is it a cut off meander of a river ? I ask because I think it may be more interesting geologically; 2/ Is it your image which appears on the image page of March 2009, and Sept 2012 of the : "The Great Australian Outback" calendar ? published by Bartel Publications, 36Ricketty Street Mascot NSW 2020, Australia; 02 9667 3999 and www.bartelpc.com.au The viewing hieght, elevation and direction seems almost identical, but it seems much dryer, also there are no vehicle tracks. In particular the seemmingly circular plan-view of 'the billabong', and the fact that the water depth seem quite deep, judging by the fact that the water level hasn't dropped much in apparently dry weather; makes me wonder whether it could be: a meteor crater, some kind of limestone subsidence ?; or some kind of artefact of an artesian bore ? The folks at Bartel seemed unable to help with such information; so if you or anyone else can help me, via mclrhn@gmail.com with a local name and /or latitude and longitude or any other information I would be very grateful;
I took this photo when in the front seat of a light aircraft flying from Galiwinku on Elcho Island to Maparu Outstation in Arnhem Land. So I have never been near it on foot. Here is a map showing Marpuru (the spelling is all over the place unfortunately) and Galiwinku http://www.arnhemweavers.com.au/images/map1.jpg. The billabong is somewhere between the two, closer to Marparu than Galiwinku. I think I have found it on Google maps! -12.217765,135.464816 :-)
