Dynamic sunset

A beautiful sunset at Olongapo, Philippines in March 2009. If this photo doesn't look real it is because I have extended the dynamic range. I have brought out the detail in the bottom darker part) of the photo using the Graduated Filter tool in Adobe Lightroom. The detail is always there, but is usually hidden because the camera is unable to bring it out as the contrast between the dark and light areas in the photograph is too great to be shown without losing one or the other or compromising both. Now that software tools are available to bring it out, expect to see more photos like this in future, where both the dark and light areas are correctly exposed. The technical term is High Dynamic Range (HDR) although this usually involves using multiple photos and not tweaking a single photo as I have done here.
