Tidal mud

These photos are of the mudflat of the tidal estuary where the Perkins barge for the Aboriginal Community of Gapuwiyak berths each week. In the bottom photo you can see evidence of traditional fire management, where the land is systematically burned each year to keep the fuel load down and prevent major bush fires. A beautiful and isolated place. The mudflats are so big because Northern Australia has some of the world's biggest tides, up to ten metres, and so at high tide much of what you see in these photos can be under water. Pictures taken in November 2008. The tyre tracks are mine! More pictures here.
